After successful completion of the course, students are able to figure out spatial configurations on a concrete building, to transform them into spatially complex compositions under the elementary aspects of architectural design, and to draw these into a superordinate whole by means of sketches, diagrams and collages as true-to-scale representations.

The lecture exercise teaches basic skills of architectural design as well as an understanding of form and effect. The lecture examines these contents by means of comparisons of selected references and elements from all epochs of art and architecture up to the present. The essential elements of a building are dealt with exemplarily on the topics of the individual assignments, which are determined by the demand for structure, facade, light and material.

The lecture exercise offers a first approach to architectural design through a series of lectures and two simple design exercises dealing with outstanding Viennese architectural icons.
The design concepts are to be presented as precise sketches, collages, schemes, variants and consequently as planar, scaled, two-dimensional drawings (ground plan, section) as well as spatial, three-dimensional geometries or perspectives. Special attention should be paid to the conclusiveness, the comprehensive treatment of the project, the depth of the underlying research and the personal expression of the overall work as a first architectural approach.
