Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the concept of scientific work. They manage to write an independent seminar paper on a self-defined question according to scientific criteria. This includes a critical examination of the topic of the work, located in housing and women's policy. You have knowledge of how to deal with relevant literature, how to narrow down the topic and formulate your own research question, how to structure the material and the seminar paper, how to articulate it scientifically as well as layout and design.

Subject of course

The principles of Austrian housing policy include the guarantee of affordable, high-quality housing for a broad section of the population. The focus is on social housing in Austria, consisting of the non-profit housing sector financed by property-related housing subsidies and municipal housing (Vienna: municipal housing). The extent to which social housing actually meets the housing needs of women is analysed, discussed and developed. In doing so, planning criteria and qualities of housing floor plans, residential buildings and living environment are considered, as well as aspects of accessibility and affordability and thus possible participation.

In the planning criteria of Gender Planning and Social Sustainability (Vienna), patterns of appropriation and use of space by the sexes, promotion of identification of the living environment and compatibility of gainful employment and family work, sense of security and choice of space use are formulated. Are housing floor plans and sizes for various life phases and situations of women as well as residential buildings for participation, supportive living together and care really sufficiently suitable?

The objectives of women's policy include equal opportunities in terms of work, income and work-life balance. Do women really have equal chances and opportunities? In Austria there are high gender-specific wage differentials, high part-time employment of women and correspondingly lower pensions. This results in a higher risk of poverty, especially for single women, single parents and retired women. How easily accessible and affordable is social housing really for them in times of reduced new construction activity, high necessary own funds and rents, access restrictions and low subject support?

The course tries to find answers to questions like: Which needs of women for housing should be met in planning, construction and legal aspects such as access and benefits? How can housing for women be positioned more strongly as a housing policy issue? What does a housing policy oriented towards gender equality look like?

Teaching methods

In the group meetings, the context of the work topic is discussed. The seminar leader delivers impulse lectures and reading texts. Students acquire knowledge and discuss and reflect on it in group work. This is followed by short presentations on self-chosen topics in individual work. These are used to create exposés with a defined question as a preliminary stage to the seminar papers. Further instructions for the scientific writing of the papers include literature research, finding a title, content structure, correct citation, layout and the creation of a bibliography and list of illustrations. Finally, the seminar papers are presented and discussed.
