Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to design and conduct a qualitative- research design for a small project in the realm the research in the built environment and to conduct research. . Furthermore, the students gain basic methodological knowledge for working with scientific text and are able to present reflect and discuss their results.

Subject of course

Focus Winter Term 19/20:

Qualitative Content Analysis in Text, Image, Plan and Diagram

During the winter term we will deal with various methods in the research of the built environment. Unlike other disciplines, architectural research does not hold an established methodological canon which is passed down within the discipline. We can, however, take methodological approaches from other disciplines, and adapt them to the requirements of research within the built environment. The seminar discusses the adequacy and applicability of various methods for architectural research, e.g. qualitative content analysis, discourse analysis, visual methods, case studies, etc.

Methods should not only presented, they should be applied and tested. In this seminar, Qualittive Content Analysis (a qualitative approach) will be presented and discussed in more detail. Participants from the MA programs will investigate documents using Qualitative Content Analysis and present their results tot he group. For PhD Students, it is also possible to present other methodological appraoches relevant for their research so as to get feedback.

The lecturers (Maja Lorbek and Michael Klein) will show the approach in an example and discuss the results with the participants.
