Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply basic methods of materialization as an integrative part of their architectural design, the course should communicate basic knowledge for an ecological and economic planning with material in the context of building construction.

Subject of course

Investigation, Analysis and preparation of relevant materials for the extension of the sample database at the department. This materials database is directly connected to the existing collection of material samples which is expanded on a continual basis.

Focus WS 2023: Extension of the HB2 material database by a collection of forward-looking, experimental materials that (can) be used in the context of design-build projects: hacking - creative upcycling strategies, emerging recyclates, high tech eco NASA - stuff...
Design-build projects are known primarily as an opportunity for urbanistic innovation beyond lengthy urban planning decision-making processes, but they also sometimes tend toward unconventional and refreshing material choices. When and where sustainable things emerge is up for consideration.

When certificates and material test sheets are missing, a deeper view behind them is required. What was / is the original use and what properties and possibilities can be derived from it? Critical questions about aesthetic fashions and necessary changes of perspective in perception are inherent.

The LVA offers the opportunity to research and process one or more key materials and their possible use in a (own) small-scale project with design-build potential. These small-scale projects can have been created in the past semesters at the TU or other universities or can be in the process of being created. Please consider sharing your own project (as a research object) with other LVA participants: Material ideas in projects can also be further developed by means of matching alternative materials. It is also possible to participate in the LVA through material research and analysis of existing design-build projects of your own choice (Which design-build projects present themselves with innovative material approaches? Criteria for the choice of materials: Innovation content, usability and processability, ecological footprint).
