Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to acquire current knowledge from new research fields in architectural and engineering disciplines, and to deal with current and future design challenges in a broader social context in an interdisciplinary and fundamental way.

Professional and methodological competences: The acquisition of knowledge from new research fields in architectural and engineering disciplines. Higher qualification through integrative know-how of potential future research and professional fields. The ability to grasp this knowledge methodically and to present it for discussion across disciplines. Independent processing of design challenges with regard to the broader social, scientific, ecological and technical context.

Cognitive and practical competences: The ability to fundamentally engage with approaches to solutions from diverse and emerging fields of architecture and engineering. Analysing, understanding and questioning fictional and realised spatial, technical and social new ideas and techniques in architecture.

Social competences and self-competences: The ability to engage in trans- and interdisciplinary creative thought and action processes in dialogue with other engineering disciplines.

Subject of course

The module imparts, explores and discusses knowledge from new research fields in architectural and engineering disciplines in order to bring together knowledge and know-how from these fields for the student's own design development. This includes: Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary strategies (from the initial idea to implementation); Current developments and results in materials and construction research; Basic principles and boundary conditions for planning and building in / under extreme conditions, their spatial and constructive implementation, choice of materials as well as topics of use and 'fitness for purpose'; Buildings that develop in their structure, form or function due to changing parameters.

In the coming WS 2022 we will expand our search for the 'essentials' in relation to current and future topics relating to our environment, sustainability and humanity. Among other things, the questions include: What kind of future do we want to create? Which role(s) does architecture play in which context? What can / must architecture offer? What can we learn from other disciplines for contemporary architecture? What visions are there and where do they lead? And what can / must be learned from the past for future projects?
