After successful completion of the course, students are able to...
write autonomously a theoretical scientific paper in the research field of architectural history. They know about the basics of serious scientific research. In writing a complete, but small, first thesis paper they had to apply the theoretic knowledge.
The Budweis - Linz - Gmunden horse-drawn railway
The construction of what is probably the first continental European horse-drawn railway route started in Budweis in 1825 and was completed for the first phase in 1835 when it reached the station in Eng(e)lhof near Gmunden, which still exists today. It was the most important delivery route for the salt mined in the Salzkammergut and brought by ship across Lake Traun. A wide range of buildings and civil engineering works (large Edlbrucker bridge in Leopoldschlag; large Kronbach bridge in Waldhausen, etc.) from this massive undertaking still exist today, including the Englhof, Lambach and Linz train station buildings. Large buildings from the packing yards and stations such as in Lest and on the Kerschbaumersattel as well as in the Maxlheid near Wels are still preserved. In addition, there are still some trackman's houses (Rainbach im Mühlkreis, watchhouse no. 25; Kleines Gusental, watchhouse no. 26), in which the trackman monitoring the track used to live with their families and also had to look after themselves there. The historical wagon material can be viewed in the Technical Museum in Vienna.
In the course of the elective seminar, not only the overall project should be followed up in the relevant specialist literature, but also the traditional buildings on site. In individually formulated research questions, each seminar participant will have to submit an independent, first, scientifically correct seminar paper as the end product of the semester.
Since the existing literature is only available in German, and research must also be carried out on site by questioning the current users, participation in the seminar is only possible with the best knowledge of German.
