Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

to accompany a conference

  • to get to know the latest methods and concepts of cultural property documentation
  • to discuss the latest techniques with renowned scientists and scholars
  • to develop a concept for a short film documentation on the basis of this knowledge
  • to compile interview guidelines for the discussion with scientists and scholars
  • to compile  a scientific summary of a session in the form of a seminar paper

Subject of course

The course is offered in combination with LVA 251.169 Architectural Documentation and which deals with cinematic documentation.

This course focuses on the theoretical part of a film documentary. It deals with how a cinematic concept is created.

Under the guidance of Sebastian Schmidl, who won the Austrian Short Film Award with his team in 2020 with the film "Freigang", the process of creating a film is worked out.

This semester, the course is offered in connection with the CHNT conference.

In the context of the conference, students have the opportunity to get in touch with renowned researchers in the field of building research, archaeology and cultural heritage. They actively accompany the conference, can discuss with the participants and thus refine the content of their film documentation.

This intensive preparation and participation in the conference will open up opportunities to see new methods and techniques used by leading researchers, to discuss them with them and to document the content in such a way that it can be understood by a wider audience.

In the scientific analysis, students learn to analyse the topic of a conference session. This involves summarising the individual presentations and comparing and analysing them with the current state of research in the field. The focus of the seminar paper is on the summary analysis in a so-called "thematic review", which is often used in science to summarise a topic and analyse relevant literature. Students should work critically, reviewing and questioning existing results. They should also develop new/different perspectives and define their own research questions.
