Earth and Mud as Building Materials: Characteristics, Construction and Conservation – an Iranian Perspective

The lecture will be held by our visiting professor from Iran, Prof. Dr. techn. Eisa Esfanjary.

Eisa Esfanjary Kenari is currently an assistant Professor at the Art University of Isfahan. His research concern Urban History and Heritage, Urban Morphology, History of Architecture and is  active in 'Architectural Conservation Intervention'.

Subject of course

The earth building tradition in Iran, and its challenge of restoration/conservation and its possible future development, will be the particular focus of this course. Drawing on many different case studies; heritage places and sites, the course aims to prepare, train and equip students with expertise to be able to understand the processes and principles of earthen construction, characterization, documentation and interpretation and the challenge of restoration and rehabilitation.

Teaching methods

1      demonstrate a reasoned understanding of the historical development and geographical distribution of earthen construction in Iran and its relevant techniques and approaches.

2      appreciate key characteristics and the way in which earth is sourced, structures are built, buildings are restored and are reconstructed.

3      understand building archaeology and the challenge of interpretation and management of earthen heritage sites and cities.

4        relate such debates to broader processes of social and technological change.
