2023S, VO, 2.0h, 2.0EC

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • LectureTube course
  • Format: Hybrid

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to evaluate design and functionality, construction and materiality, as well as the impact and perception of existing architecture in a more concrete way.

Building and functional typologies will be discussed, as well as the historical, social and political context. Topics include building typologies, but also historical, social and political contexts.
In a one-semester course, this can only be achieved by focusing on a limited number of topics. The aim, therefore, is to provide students with a basic knowledge that can serve as a point of reference and support in further studies, especially in dealing with architecture in a historical context and, above all, in their own design work.

Subject of course

Preliminary topics of the VO " History of Architecture 2" in the summer semester 2023

Topic 1: It's all THEATER!

Theme 2: Sports venues as spaces for collective events from antiquity to the present day

  • Town house and palace : early modern times to current trends
  • From Prairie House to Fallingwater: Frank Lloyd Wright and his residential buildings (guest lecture DI Mariela Dittrich, TU Vienna)
  • The *Final* House - Tomb Architecture as Signifier

Teaching methods

The lectures " Baugeschichte 1" and "Baugeschichte 2" focus on the existing building fabric and thus move thematically within the field of architecture with the greatest potential in the current building scene. With this background knowledge, the topics of the lecture are chosen in such a way that the students can gain a practical benefit for their further education and later in their professional life that they can understand: The history of building and building techniques from the early advanced civilizations to the present day, building and functional typologies and their development, aspects of urban planning history in context, analytical and critical evaluation of existing/historical architecture, and much more.

Examination modalities

Written exam!

In order to offer students the opportunity to complete the course during the summer semester of 2023 with as few hurdles as possible, an additional "SONDERPRÜFUNGSTERMIN" will be offered to all students with a certain level of attendance at the lecture this year. By attending at least 9 out of 12 lecture dates, you can secure a spot at the special exam - on 17 May 2023 - in AudiMax. Registration for the exam is automatic if sufficient attendance is achieved. For administrative reasons, only attendance in the lecture hall will be recognised.

Attendance is checked via the TUWEL attendance module - for this, you must be logged in to TUWEL. Students will be asked to scan a QR code during the lecture. They must then log in to TUWEL to register their attendance. The QR code will be projected in the lecture hall during the lecture.
