Design/Build: EARTH-WOOD-INTERVENTION in the SOPHIENGARTEN

251.831 Kleines Entwerfen linked with Softskill 251.730 VU Architekturdokumentation und Präsentation/Transdisziplinäre Interaktionen

Attention: The design studio can only be attended in combination with the VU Architekturdokumentation und Präsentation / Transdisziplinäre Interationen.

Basic German skills are essential! The lectures will partly be in German.

The basis of the design is dealing with earth and wood as building materials. The aim is to combine the material-specific properties of earth as well as the haptic and dynamic qualities of this building material in a sculptural design and then implement it structurally. In parallel to the design work, the students will already experience practical work with the building material in order to develop a feeling for the special features and the haptic qualities of this building material and to be able to react directly to these experiences in the design.

The site is located in the Sophiengarten (https://sites.google.com/view/sophiengarten/homehttps://www.facebook.com/Sophiengarten/) on the Erdberger Lände in the 3rd district. This is a temporary use area, which is used by an urban gardening association. The aim of the design is the creation of a sheltered sitting area, where the hobby-gardeners can sit together, rest and exchange ideas.

Subject of course

Design task: A sculpture design is developed out of earth and wood that can be experiencet in its entire three-dimensionality and has spatial qualities that offers protection and invites you to rest. The functional constraints are reduced to a minimum. Design and material are directly linked from the beginning, e.g. the design emerges from the possibilities and limitations of the material earth. Implementation as a participatory process (involvement of `gardeners', neighbors) is considered from the beginning on. Since the topic re/upcycling represents an important part of the existing urban gardening concept in the Sophiengarten, this philosophy should also be continued in the design. Used materials and articles are supplied to a new function.

Teaching methods

The design is based on models made out of wood and earth, only secondarily sketches and drawings are used.

Conditions:

- Examination of artistic-aesthetic requirements in the sense of a sculptural design

- Meaningful assignment of functions: seat, play or residence possibilities

- Creating SPACE - functional, aesthetic, sensual, inspiring - Structural moisture protection of the material: splash water protection, horizontal wall coverings etc.

- Creative integration of other building materials (eg. wood, upcycled materials)

- Timing: taking into account the timing, the required drying processes, etc., or the feasibility of the project within the time frame available - cost calculation
