After successful completion of the course, students are able to
students are able to view architectural relationships from a global perspective and to understand the context on a holistic level. The 21st century brings with it a new phase of globalism and new approaches in architecture that are controversial. The following key questions are dealt with: What are the future challenges of a globally connected architecture? Adequate housing as a human right? What does building in disadvantaged regions mean? What kind of social and cultural responsibility does architecture have? Do other cultures have architectural answers that we don't have, or ask architectural questions that we haven't even thought of?
In the lecture series current theories in architectural discourse are linked to topics of 'international development'. This prepares future architects to integrate their own action patterns into globalized processes and to think about local issues in supra-local contexts.

ARCHITECTURE and DEVELOPMENT - building in a globalized world
The course consists of lectures, which are extended by guest lectures. While the lectures illuminate the theoretical background and terminology, the guest lectures provide insights into practical case studies in so-called `developing regions´ and open a forum for discussions.
Architecture is defined as a medium of meaning that is treated, constructed and interpreted differently in the respective cultures. Architecture expresses how a culture, a social group, experiences itself, it embodies its ideals and the way in which they are received by others. Architecture is therefore more than purpose and construction - it represents a way of life, people's self-perception and thus their identity. Today it is hardly possible to master the increasingly complex tasks of the built environment within one discipline. In addition to the architectural discipline, examples and methods from other disciplines, especially from the cultural and social sciences, are presented that can be used profitably in architecture.
Furthermore, the importance of socially committed architecture is emphasized, which is becoming increasingly clear as an independent movement within contemporary architecture and goes beyond the Euro-American centered perception. For example, the question of what position architects take in construction processes in less developed regions is itself the subject of systematic studies. In addition to the technical components, the social and cultural processes as well as the mediating role of the architect are highlighted here.
The focus is on architecture on a human scale, in its profound, everyday meaning, beyond norms, laws and high-tech systems. Architecture that allows creativity and invention and conveys long-term cultural values based on social processes.
