Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to gain an overview of the basics of the specific restoration methods for monuments. In groups the students research in archives and libraries and present their results on site at the objects.

Subject of course

Different approaches and strategies, requirements for the design, from urban planning scale to individual buildings. Special topics such as the energetic renovation of individual buildings and ensembles. Outlook into specific sub-topics (e.g. dealing with protection zones, post-war architecture, cultural landscape, garden monument conservation, industrial monuments). In the summer semester 2022 the following topic will be dealt with in the exercise Monument and Restoration:

Typical post-war modernism - a special task for monument preservation

The aging building stock of the post-war period is often not appreciated or not appreciated enough today. Accordingly, the handling of this stock, which includes many buildings which, as important witnesses of their construction period, are among the buildings worthy of protection or even protected, sometimes seems careless. The requirements for the preservation of this stock are complex and still little consolidated. The aim of the exercise is to introduce the participants to the topic and to sensitize them for the increasingly important handling of valuable buildings of the post-war years.

On the basis of suggested topics (constituent properties, such as construction and construction systems, urban planning aspects, materials and surfaces, equipment, etc.), which are of particular importance in the context of monument preservation measures on objects of the post-war period, we deepen our knowledge and develop criteria and helpful guiding ideas with regard to future renovations.
