The LVA is linked to the Module Cultural Spaces in the summer semester 2023.The maximum number of participating students is limited to 10!This semester, the module Cultural Spaces deals with the topic of attribute mapping for World Heritage sites in the sense of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention. The UNECO World Heritage Convention was ratified by 193 states in 1972 to create an international instrument for the protection of cultural and natural heritage sites. The Convention defines the criteria under which an object, ensemble or cultural or natural landscape can be inscribed on the World Heritage List. The sites on the List are protected by international law, which states that by inscribing a site on the World Heritage List, the States on which it is located undertake to take all measures to preserve it.The World Heritage Committee, the main body responsible for implementing the Convention, has developed precise criteria for inscribing sites on the World Heritage List and for granting international assistance under the World Heritage Fund. These are contained in a document entitled "Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention". This document is regularly revised by the Committee to take into account new concepts, findings or experiences. It sets out how the Outstanding Universal Value of a site can be described. Attributes that describe the authenticity and integrity of a site are important. Describing attributes has only become an issue in recent years and the methods to do so are still being developed. The module will describe the background of attribute mapping and the practical approaches to it. In cooperation with three Indonesian universities (Universitas Atma Jaya, Yogyakarta, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta und Universitas Trisakti, Jakarta) and the National Committee of ICOMOS Indonesia and ICOMOS Austria, the attributes of the cultural landscape around the World Heritage Site "Borobudur Temple Compounds" will be surveyed and the approach will be compared with the survey of attributes in the World Heritage Site "Historic Centre of Vienna". Since 2020 it is forbidden to climb the Borobudur Temple. As the LVA serves scientific research, we have a special permit and the unique opportunity to visit the temple in the small group of the LVA.
