After successful completion of the course, students are able to analyze elementary principles of building in different cultures and to evaluate the possibilities of their development in future architectural planning.
Discussion of the genesis and evolution of basic building forms and types against the background of cultural and social environment. Topics: Frame constructions (Africa, America, Asia, Oceania). Adobe building (North America, West Africa). Stone architecture (Oceania, East Africa). Pithouse and cliff dwelling (North America). Pile buildings and platform houses (Asia, Oceania, Africa, Mesoamerica). Tumuli (North and West Europe, Mediterranean area, North Africa, Middle East, South Asia, North and Central America, Polynesia).
Elementary building cultures in Asia, Africa, America and Oceania are presented with regard to similarities and differences, whereby the thematic order is implemented on the one hand on a material-technical level (timber constructions, earthen construction, stone construction), on the other hand it is extended to building types, the origin and development of which is considered against the background of specific climatic conditions. Particular importance is attached to the respective social environment and the corresponding technological possibilities.
