Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to extend their elective seminary paper. The course provides the students with the option to write a theoretical bachelor thesis according to international academic standards within the research fields history of architecture, comparative history of architecture and architectural theory.

Subject of course

The students learn within this private seminary, how to entitle academic papers and how to work out proper research questions. Additionally the senior scientist teaches them, how to formulate and which methods within the field are available. The students improve their abstracts, their scientific introductions and their conclusions by discussing good examples of the research discipline.

Teaching methods

The students bring in their successfully graded seminary paper from the field of history of art or history of architecture. This paper serves as base, to complete it through individual and in-depth work with the teacher into a theoretical bachelor thesis.

Additional information

Theoretical bachelor thesis:

In order to receive a theoretical bachelor thesis, the following courses must be completed: elective seminar + advanced seminar + lecture series (methodology of architectural research).

The thesis can be listed as a theoretical bachelor thesis in the bachelor’s certificate upon request.

Attention! The theoretical bachelor thesis does not replace the "integrative design". This must also be done in each case.

§5 (2) Bachelor study plan:

(2) At the request of students, the department responsible for studies can authorize the development of the bachelor thesis in the “Architectural Research Module”.

Three courses are linked to the theoretical bachelor thesis:

an elective seminar (e.g. elective seminar comparative building history, elective seminar architectural history, etc.) (mandatory for everyone anyway)

The lecture series Methodology of Architectural Research (259.268), 1.0 St. / 1.0 ETCS (already mandatory for everyone)

an advanced seminar (e.g. advanced seminar (251.693) to the extent of 3.0 St. / 4.0 ETCS); In the advanced seminar, the topic dealt with in the elective seminar is elaborated in more depth or the additional effort is compensated with an additional certificate.

Registration: The submission of a theoretical bachelor thesis requires the approval of the dean of studies. The students therefore have to send an abstract of their work to the dean of studies.

Scope: About twice as extensive as a normal elective seminar paper (approx. 50.000 characters or 40 pages)
