After successful completion of the course, students are able to evaluate selected historical vault constructions, their construction methods and manufacturing processes, as well as concepts of planning and construction against the corresponding historical background. Furthermore, the repair and refurbishment of constructions and load-bearing structures are specifically addressed, the conceptual foundations are developed and common approaches are critically discussed.
This takes place in selected buildings, which are visited and intensively examined - this semester the focus is on the Romanesque cathedral in Speyer.

Lectures and presentations for the students of TU Wien will take place on site (Speyer Cathedral & Co.) or introductory and concluding via Zoom.

In addition to analysing the historical vault constructions, current and controversial questions will be asked about the conservation treatment as a result of the interventions of the 20th century, the stability of the vaults and the stone conservation of load-bearing parts of the construction. Recently realised and ongoing projects will be presented; discussions with experts on site are also planned.
These topics will be presented in and around the building, including areas that are otherwise not open to the public such as roof spaces and towers. It is also possible to visit other buildings from different eras in the city and its surroundings.
