Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to enumerate building evaluation
systems and their criteria. This applies in particular to the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) and the Life Cycle
Assessment (LCA). Furthermore the students are able to describe and assess the calculation process, and enumerate the influencing factors and results.

Presentation of LCC/LCA tools and methods
DGNB/ÖGNI or IBO Methodology
Consideration of the Life cycle: production, use/operation, demolition

  • Calculation of LCA/energy demand based on a practical example
    • Lifespan of buildings/building elements
    • Environmental impact categories, datasets: ökobau.dat, baubook, gemis
  • LCC Calculation Procedure
    • Introduction to cost and consequential cost determination methodology
    • Discounted cash flow method
    • Data sets and databases: BKI, usage costs BKI, guidelines for sustainable
      construction etc.


Teaching methods

Introduction to the life cycle analysis process, as well as presentation of various building certification systems.

Calculation of a case study and discussion of the results.
