Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to determine the basic components for the mathematical modeling of biological and chemical processes of wastewater treatment from conventional wastewater data. This allows them to apply biokinetic models prepared by international expert groups.

Subject of course

The dynamic behaviour of activated sludge systems can only be adequately described with the aid of simulation models, whereby today the Activated Sludge Model No.1 (ASM1) is predominantly used worldwide. The most important aspect of the application of dynamic simulation is to achieve a deeper understanding of the process, from which further application possibilities (education and training, as well as in planning and operation) can be derived. Guidance on the application of ASM1 is given and the preconditions for the use of this tool, such as balancing of existing plants and "parameter estimation", are presented.
