After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain the general principles of inland waterway engineering, to apply its basic concepts and to explain, plan and pre-dimension the necessary infrastructure of waterways.
The general basics cover the following topics:
- System, importance, economics, environmental impact, strengths, weaknesses and opportunities of inland navigation
- Ship and convoy types
- Technology of ships
- Shipping and fairway
- Inland waterways and their legal framework in Europe
- Construction and improvement of inland waterways
- Inland ports and their forms
- Austrian Danube ports
- Locks and boat lifts
The lecture hydraulic engineering is held exclusively in the distance learning format. The students who have booked the LVA are provided with ppt slides with audio commentary including images and video material as well as a link for an e-learning part of the lecture via TISS.
Simple questions can be emailed to the speaker at any time.
If necessary, a question time will be held online or in person towards the end of the semester, depending on the rules then applicable at the TU Wien.
Online exam procedure:
Webcam position: During the exam, the students have to align their webcam so that they and the desk can be seen (distance to the student approx. 1 - 1.5 m). If the webcam is integrated in the work device, the device must still be able to be operated by the student and the page with the test / information must be legible (e.g. adjust the font size). The camera (and the desk) should be positioned so that most of the room and the door can be seen. Make and check these settings offline in advance. If you don't have a webcam (separately or in your notebook / tablet) you can also use your smartphone (e.g. apps like DroidCam). The webcam must remain switched on during the entire test.
You should join the ZOOM web meeting (link in TISS) no later than 10 minutes before the start of the exam in order to have enough time for the setup. When entering the ZOOM web meeting, you have to authenticate yourself with your first and last name.
At the beginning of the test, the identity is checked using a video identification process (move head and student ID in front of the camera). Then a rotation of the camera through the room is required to ensure that there are no unauthorized aids or people in the room. The test is then started.
All participants are muted during the exam. Questions can be put to the examiner using the chat function.
During the entire test, the sound/loudspeaker must be activated in order to be able to hear and follow the auditor’s announcements. If fraud is suspected, the inspector's instructions must be followed (swiveling the camera again or releasing the current screen). If the exam participant does not follow the instructions or if a suspicion of fraud is confirmed, the exam will be canceled and this will be counted towards the permitted number of exam attempts.
In the event of technical interruptions, the examiner decides (depending on the duration and scope of the technical problems) whether the examination should be aborted or continued.
Do not write on the first sheet in the upper right corner (size of the student ID).
In order to submit the written examination, the described sheets (in full) must be scanned or photographed within 5 minutes after the examination and sent to the lecturer/examiner by email. The student ID is placed on the first sheet in the space reserved for it (top right corner) so that the student ID can also be scanned. Individual images may not be uploaded, only a coherent PDF document (use apps/programs (Adobe Scan, Office Lens)), make sure to test and familiarize yourself with them before the exam! The ZOOM web meeting connection must remain active during the scanning or photographing and uploading process, i.e. the scanning device must already be within range (if a smartphone is used as a webcam, this device CANNOT be used for scanning or photographing!).
The ZOOM web meeting connection is then terminated by the examiner after checking the submission. If students want to leave the exam before the end of the exam, this must be communicated via the chat; the connection is only terminated by the examiner. Should a student independently terminate the ZOOM web meeting connection during the exam, this will be considered an exam termination.
Assessment scheme for the online exam:
The assessment of the written online exam is carried out in the same way as the assessment of a written face-to-face examination.
