After successful completion of the course, students are able to prepare preliminary designs for dam-project-planning with regard to local topographical and soil mechanical conditions. This preliminary design allows for cost estimation and serves as an approach for sophisticated analytical routines in the form of numerical methods.
Students are able to classify the importance of these facilities in connection with "Renewable Energy Sources".
Planning and design of dams and - related principles and decision criteria are discussed. The relevant types, such as Gravity Dams, Arch Dams, Roller Compacted Concrete Dams (RCC) and Earth- and Rockfill-Dams are treated with regard to optimal dimensioning. In particular, numerical analysis methods (FEM) are presented and earthquake loading is discussed in detail. The final chapter includes case studies concerning causes of damage and remediation methods of concrete dams.
In addition to basic principles, the relevant 'Numerical Analysis Methods - Finite Elements FE' are discussed and demonstrated (Abaqus). Earthquake investigations are possible on request in limited specialized hours.
