This course is in all assigned curricula part of the STEOP.
This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2023S, VU, 2.0h, 2.5EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.5
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to... select and apply suitable methods for investigating the hydraulic soil properties, estimate the amount of water abstraction to protect building pits, determine if groundwater can be used for a typical household, and analyse the impact of flood protection dams on the groundwater flow situation.

Subject of course

Introduction into the types of subsurface tests as basis for modelling

Applications and limits of groundwater models

Investigation methods for determining the hydraulic properties of subsurface materials

Thermal use of groundwater

Practical exercises:

  • Evaluating a steady-state pumping test,

  • Determining the hydraulic conductivity from infiltration tests and sieve analyses,

  • Assessing the capacity of a single well and a multiple well facility (Water control at building pits),

  • Estimating the impact of thermal use of groundwater,

  • Investigating the groundwater flow near flood protection dams with the help of a 2-D groundwater model.

Teaching methods

Hands-on exercises, theory lectures, autonomous learning of selected Topics and oral presentations.
