Properties

  • Semester hours: 3.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: UE Exercise
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • distinguish between different soil types,
  • determine soil properties,
  • perform simple practical calculations,
  • solve different foundation and earth-static related problems,
  • perform settlement and earth pressure calculations,
  • select suitable soil improvement and excavation pit retaining structures.

Subject of course

The exercise Ground Engineering and Soil Mechanics consists of the following units:

  • introduction,
  • soil characteristics and soil classification,
  • hydraulic properties of soils,
  • deformation properties of soils,
  • soil strength characteristics,
  • earth pressure,
  • stresses and deformations of the underground,
  • soil improvement,
  • shallow and deep foundations,
  • embankments and cuts,
  • deep excavations and related retaining structures,
  • ground water lowering.

Teaching methods

The exercise Ground Engineering and Soil Mechanics is a computational exercise accompanying the lecture. Selected cases of ground engineering and soil mechanics problems are calculated and discussed every week during the exercise. The knowledge of the lecture content is required and is absolutely necessary for a successful completion of the exercise.

Mode of examination

Immanent

Additional information

The course will be held in presence in the summer semester 2024.
Tests will be held in the form of TUWEL tests. Please consider the notes of the introductory lecture for further information. The exercise notes will be provided via TISS.
