220.034 Applied Petrology
This course is in all assigned curricula part of the STEOP.
This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2023S, UE, 2.0h, 2.0EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: UE Exercise
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to determine and interpret the characteristic stone parameters for estimating the weathering behavior, as well as for checking the suitability for various applications (facade panels, paving, surcharges for concrete, etc.) on standard test specimens or grits independently. Furthermore, simple engineering-geological methods (measurements with the geologist's compass, layer sphere diagrams, determination of the degree of decomposition, determination of interface properties, tilt test to estimate the angle of friction, assessment of the weathering condition, graphic representation, etc.) can be applied.

Subject of course

the exercises will be executed in the laboratory or in the field (quarries, etc.)

Lab:

Self-employed determination of characteristic physical properties of stone based on Austrian Standards (strength, hardness, porosity, bulk density, water adsorption, etc.)

Field:

Basics of geological and geotechnical mapping and documentation of stone and rock properties using geological compass, rebound hammer, point-load-test, ultrasonic velocity and other relevant field methods.

Teaching methods

practical exercises in the rock-laboratium or in the field
