Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.0
  • Type: UE Exercise

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to work on concrete tasks in the main areas of rock mechanics (slopes, foundations,          underground construction) where statements about stability are required using established methods (e.g. block theory).

Subject of course

1. Determination of the failure mechanism and critical slope angle of rock slopes (application example quarry) by means of the stereographic projection (Stereographic analysis of structural geology)

2. Assessment of the stability of rock wedges (application example road cutting).

3. Basics and application of block theory in underground construction

4. Estimation of the runout of rockfall and rock avalanches

Teaching methods

Presentation of the current state of knowledge, work on example exercises (e.g. stereographic analysis of structural geology)
