Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to design complex structures showing a good knowledge on the nonlinear behavior of frame structures, and they can manage their design under seismic loadings.

Subject of course

Content of Lecture:

In this lecture,  first the basic concepts and definitions of plastic analysis and design of planar frame structures will be presented.  Then the derivation of plastic load factor of simple beams and frames will be introduced. Next the fundamental theorems of plastic analysis and design will be proved. General methods consisting of six methods (three based on safe theorem and three bases on unsafe theorems) will be provided for analysis and design of frame structures. Deflection and stability of frame structures will then be discussed. Non conventional structures (mainly grid structures) will then briefly be discussed. Formulation will be presented for optimal plastic analysis and design of frame structures using theory of graphs.

Teaching methods

Lectures including many numerical example problems.
