Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply mechanical models to calculate the structural behavior of simple reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures which have been subjected to normal forces, bending moments, as well as shear and torsion loads. With this knowledge appropriate dimensions for the concrete structures can be chosen and existing structures can be evaluated for their structural load-bearing capacity.

Subject of course

Following a topical introduction (Building with concrete, Building materials, Load-bearing behavior of the composite material comprising of concrete and steel reinforcement, Safety concepts) the main focus will be the design and calculation of structures according to the serviceability limit state and ultimate limit state. The interrelation of both states will be explained using various examples.

Teaching methods

Lectures on the theoretical principles as well as the application of mechanical models needed for the design of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structures.

Mode of examination

Written

Additional information

Participation in the course on practical applications (212.022) is expected.

Attention: As of the academic year 2014/15 the course on practical applications (212.022) will take place only during the winter semester!

Examination modalities

Written examination; Duration of examination: 180 Minutes

Examination regulations:

The written examination consists of a theoretical part and a calculation example. Both the theoretical as well as the calculation example have to be completed positively in order to pass the course. The first part of the exam (theory and simple calculation examples) no helping tools (just a pen, no calculators) are allowed. The answers to the questions will be filled out on the distributed examination sheets. Only a pen will be needed for this part of the examination. For the second part of the examination (calculation examples), which will be handed out once the first part of the examination are collected, it is allowed to use the lecture script (current version: October 2013, older scrips are not permitted) as well as the Eurocode 2 (current version: ÖNORM EN 1992-1-1 and ÖNORM B 1992-1-1) and a calculator. Coefficients from the national annex may be transferred to the main document (ÖNORM EN 1992-1-1). Flagging or highlighting of various pages is allowed. The script from the tutorial (Übungsskriptum), other documents as for example “Bautabellen”, prewritten calculating “recipes” or self-made formularies are not permitted. Various writing utensils (pens, pencils, and colored pens), a protractor as well as a calculator are recommended.
