Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to…

  • describe the physical measuring principles (inductive, piezoelectric, optical) of different sensors and assess their possible applications in relation to structural dynamic measurement tasks.
  • explain measurement chains for the determination of time-dependent mechanical quantities and justify the sensible placement of sensors and name necessary additional devices.
  • prepare and analyse measurement data digitally and interpret the results.
  • carry out concurrent numerical calculations and compare them to the measurement results.

Subject of course

Measurement equipment for recording of time-dependent mechanical parameters (sensors, amplifiers, display of measured data, processing of recorded data). Experimental determination of natural frequencies and damping coefficients considering as example beam- and multistory frame structures by applying piezoelectric accelerometers and force transducers. Demonstration of passive vibration control considering a three story shear frame. Introduction in analyses of signals in the time and freqeuncy domain. Introduction in computer-controlled vibration techniques(software: MATLAB).

Teaching methods

Presentation of the most important components of a measuring chain for structural dynamic measurements. Experimental determination of dynamic system parameters using the example of beam and multi-story frames.
