After successful completion of the course, students are able to evaluate the material glass and glass products from an engineering perspective. They will be able to design and dimension glass constructions in accordance with current standards and guidelines.
Students will be able to assess the specific material properties with regard to design, safety and building physics requirements.
The content of the lecture is the use of glass as a load-bearing element in construction. All knowledge of the structural use of glass, the fundamentals and special features of the materials and building products used, joining and connection techniques, the development of detailed solutions, dimensioning and the current status of standards and guidelines are taught.
The lecture focuses on
- Types of glass in construction and their mechanical properties
- fracture behaviour
- Design principles and safety concepts
- Bearing and connection techniques
- Requirements for vertical, overhead, fall-protection and walk-on glazing
- Design concepts for glass structures
- Experimental verifications
- Standards and guidelines for structural glass construction
- Design and dimensioning examples
- Flat and spatial constructions
