Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand the relevance of mechanobiological processes and to assess heir meaning for biomedical mechanisms. Based on a number of examples relevant for biomedical engineering (including bone, tissue engineering, cancer etc.), they will understand the importance of mechanobiological regulatory cues, and they will have learned which theoretical tools are available allowing to actually quantify how mechanical loading influences biological processes.

Subject of course

Explanation of there term mechanobiology; Discussion of examples in the context of biomedical engineering; Description of experimental methods for investigating mechanobiological effects; Introduction of pertinent modeling concepts; Focus on multiscale methods allowing for quantification of mechanobiological stimuli; Presentation of examples; Application of multiscale modeling methods based on the concept of continuum micromechanics.

Teaching methods

Lectures supported by digital presentations, discussion of case studies.

Mode of examination

Written and oral
