Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  •  design structures like trusses, frames, residential buildings… according to the needs of timber
  •  support the design and verification process by intensified use of structural engineering software
  • overcome current restrictions within EC5 by adequate structural modelling and use of design software
  • critically read and interpret national respective European technical approvals for structural elements and connection systems
  • evaluate and plan the option of alternative experimental structural verification

Subject of course

The course encompasses the following thematic issues:

  • Criteria for the design of timber structures
  • Choice of structural systems
  • Ductility and redundancy in timber engineering
  • Special types of fasteners
  • Swinging of timber structures and earth quakes
  • Modeling strategies using engineering design software
  • experimental design
  • Production and assembling

In a design project, alternative structural systems (global structural system and connections) will be designed, calculated using engineering design software, and critically analyzed.
