Goals
The course focuses on building a foundation for identifying and examining ethical and professional issues, taking into account various ethical perspectives of current and emerging technologies and their stakeholders. It aims to empower students with the ability to approach these issues in an ethically informed and proactive manner. The course enhances critical thinking and argumentation skills through discussions and analysis of theoretical and practical issues, professional practices, and technology applications in their broader social context.
Topics
The course will include philosophical foundations of ethics and critical thinking with analysis of case studies within digitalized, information-based, and constantly communicating, connected world. Possible topics include technological mediation, moralizing things, technology games, legislation, ethical aspects of the social impact of technology, digital humanism, global ethics, ethics & design, inclusiveness and diversity, human-centric design, autonomous cars, and robots, ethical IT innovation, ecosystem perspective on the ethics of ai and emerging digital technologies, and thinking beyond compliance.
The course finishes with a mini conference where participants present ethical aspects of their research projects. The contributions will be peer-reviewed by the class.
The course includes lectures, guest lectures, discussions, group work, peer review, and a mini conference.
The lecturer of this course will be Gordana Dodig-Crnkovic / Mälardalen University and Chalmers University of Technology.
This is a guest professor course of the TU Wien Informatics Doctoral School. It is targeted to Doctoral Students of the Faculty of Informatics, but, subject to availability of free seats, open to all PhD students and interested Master students.
