Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • Distinguish and apply different types of number representations,
  • describe and apply basic concepts of information and coding theory, 
  • Formulate, manipulate and interpret Boolean algebra expressions and apply minimization methods to them, 
  • understand, apply and transfer basic logical concepts,
  • design and explain simple combinational circuits,
  •  describe a system using suitable logic or a suitable type of machine,
  • recognize and correct syntactic and semantic errors in a model, 
  • analyze informally described systems, reduce them to the relevant characteristics and model them with formal specification methods.

  • Propositional logic, Boolean algebra, minimization methods
  • Predicate logic as a specification language
  • Finite automata, including Moore and Mealy automata

  • Realizations of automata
  • Petri nets

Learning activities comprise lectures, assignments in large and small groups, as well as three written exams (+one make-up test)

Examination modalities

To pass the course successfully it is required to pass entry-tests, to solve a certain number of homework exercises, and to get a positive assessment for the presentation of solved homework exercises during classes. In addition, a positive assessment of three written exams is required. All details about examination modalities are presented during the preliminary meeting and can be looked up in the sildes for the preliminary meeting in the TUWEL-course.
