Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply fundamental knowledge on user experience and interaction design. Students learn about the underlying psychological constructs (such as User Experience, User Acceptance, Workload, Trust, etc.) as well as the scientific method for systematically analyzing existing (i.e., user studies) and designing interfaces in the different phases of the human-centered development process.

Subject of course

https://tuwel.tuwien.ac.at/course/view.php?id=37055

The course conveys methodological knowledge about the evaluation of human-machine interfaces according to defined goals, prototyping tools at different product phases, and basic knowledge about human factors.

Conveyance of fundamental knowledge:

  • Definitions and assessment of key constructs
  • Human-centered development process
  • Scientific evaluation of human-machine interfaces
  • Human-in-the-loop systems (perception-understanding-planning-acting, HIP model, etc.)
  • Basics of human perception (senses)
  • Basic human factors concepts (levels of control, stages of actions, affordances, etc.)
  • Overview about in- and output devices and key concepts
  • Design principles (colors, shapes, etc.)
  • Human behavior models (Fitt’s law, GOMS, KLM, etc.)
  • Task analysis and context analysis

Conveyance and practice of abilities and skill

  • Structured elaboration of the human-centered design process
  • User study development and implementation
  • Engineering of user requirements
  • Ideation and prototyping at different development stages (sketching, wireframes, video-, soft- and hardware prototyping)
  • Evaluation methods at different development stages (interviews, questionnaires, lab- and field experiments)

Teaching methods

Interface & Interaction design conveys methods and knowledge for the design of human-machine interfaces. The course addresses the human-centered design process in an interdisciplinary fashion, including knowledge from fields such as computer science, human factors & ergonomics, and psychology.

Additional information

Due to the state of the COVID pandemic, changes may be applied when necessary. Above all, this includes a short-term switch to online teaching. However, it is pointed out that there is no guarantee that all the lecture content will be available in digital form.

The introductory lecture will happen on 15.3.2022; 15:00-17:00; EI 10 Fritz Paschke HS

In case of important questions please contact the head of the lecture - Philipp Wintersberger (philipp.wintersberger@tuwien.ac.at)

Examination modalities

The final compulsory proof of performance is given by the semester project. In groups of 5, students will be handed out 5 assignments covering the human-centered design (HCD) process. In total, 5 assignments related to important HCD phases (analysis, ideation, design, implementation, evaluation) will have to be completed. Student groups will have to complete the work, document, and present their results. The final project outcome will be presented in form of a short (3-5 minute) video. The final grade will be determined based on the results of the 5 assignments (20 points each).

The introductory lecture will happen on 15.3.2022; 15:00-17:00; EI 10 Fritz Paschke HS

The overall assessment is based on the following ECTS-Breakdown:

-        Lecture content: 25h

-        Exercises content: 25h

-        Group assignments: 25h
