  • Apply methods from the area of systematic literature reviews
  • Conceptualize and write a survey paper for a research topic in the field of distributed systems
  • Conceptualize and give a talk about a survey in the field of distributed systems

Subject of course

This seminar discusses current state-of-the-art and perspectives in distributed systems. This year the focus is on Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, Edge and Fog Computing, Blockchains, Cyber-physical Systems and Big Data and related topics.

The single topics for seminar papers can be found at the TUWel site of this course.

Teaching methods

Introduction into methods from the field of systematic literature reviews, conceptualization and realization of a survey paper, conceptualization and presentation of a talk.

The seminar will be given in "Distance Learning" mode. The two introductory lectures will be provided as lecture recordings in TUWel; the videos will be provided until the according dates. There will be an "open online consultation hour", which is used to openly discuss student questions (if there is an according demand). The student talks are held live and online; we will make use of Gotomeeting for this.

Additional information

At the beginning of the seminar, there will be two lectures (08.10 and 15.10) which introduce common approaches how to conduct a survey in a systematic way. The presentations by the students are not given in a very large block at the end of the semester, but in smaller units - these seminars are done on Thursdays from 13:00 to 15:00 (05.11.2020-10.12.2020 and 07.01.2021-28.01.2021). If we really need all these dates strongly depends on the number of students who want to attend the seminar.

The assignment of presentation dates are done based on the topics (see TUWel). Attendance is mandatory, i.e., students should attend at least n-2 out of the n planned units (including the one where they present themselves). As written above, "n" will be defined based on the number of students attending.
