Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • apply knowledge and abilities in user interface design and interaction design aside from traditional desktops
  • understand and apply the principles of design and evaluation according to the fundamentals of HCI when developing future applications and interaction techniques
  • critically reflect on results and effects of new technological approaches and attempts
  • design and develop innovative interaction techniques
  • prototype new ways of Human-Computer Interaction.

Subject of course

Beyond the Desktop is engaged in designing alternatives for traditional graphical user interfaces. By digitalizing our environment - enabled by more performant and convenient hardware - and the progressive development of sensors and technologies, new ways of Human-Computer Interaction are possible. In this lecture, the according „enabling technologies“ and their field of application like mobile, tangible and ubiquitous computing and ambient displays are presented.

Those HCI fields are examined by critically elaborating various case studies.

Further, methods are presented for designing appropriate and innovative user interfaces, their prototyping and evaluation.

Teaching methods

The lecture consists of a lecture and assignments. The topics presented in the lecture are elaborated in the according assignment tasks.
