Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • explain the process of optimization
  • enumerate relevant problem areas for optimized HW/SW partitioning (real-time, energy, fault tolerance, certification, etc.)
  • list the respective pros and cons of a HW or SW solution and make a qualified decision
  • describe modern methods for combined HW/SW development

Subject of course

Optimization of the overall system comprising HW and SW Decision criteria for HW/SW parititioning, trends, case studies from industry, virtual prototyping.

Teaching methods

To achieve an interactive design that suits the master-level of this course, in addition to the classical lectures, participants give talks (in groups, topics are assigned at the start of the course) that serve as a starting point for discussions. Furthermore depending on availability guest speakers are invited from industry or academia to share their expertise in specific topics and contribute to discussions. The aim is to convey concrete competence and deep understanding rather than mere knowledge ("learning matter"). In addition, soft skills are exercised (teamworking, presentation, discussion, protocol)
