Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to give an overview of the residues resulting from off-gas cleaning. The students know the main methods for the characterization of the residues resulting from off-gas cleaning.They know the main methods for treatment and utilization of off-gas cleaning residues. After successful completion of the course, students are able to work on concepts for utilization of off-gas cleaning residues.

Subject of course

The emission control process, deployed in industry, will be classified according to the accruing of waste material and its consistency (solids, sludge, sewage). Subsequently the properties of waste material and their classification will be studied (composition, physical characteristics). In accordance with “the waste hierarchy”, the possibilities of avoidance, utilization and disposal of individual residues are considered. Industrial processes for the treatment for this waste material (mechanical, thermal, chemical) are presented. With reference to these processes the usage or ways of disposing important groups of residues (dust from the iron and steel industry and cements works, fly ash from combustion processes, flue gas desulfurization residues) will be reviewed.

Teaching methods

Presentation of the residues arising in the off-gas cleaning processes and their characterization. Presentation of the options for avoiding, recycling and disposing of individual residues. Discussion of current industrial processes for the treatment of these residues and possible optimization potential based on current examples.
