After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply basic biochemical terms that serve as a knowledge base for tasks in bioinformatics, and to explain the most important biochemical processes (structure and function of the cell and its components, function and regulation of the main metabolic pathways)
I. Basic concepts of biochemistry (structure of the cell, characteristics of amino acids and peptides, structure and function of proteins, enzymes and biocatalysis, nomenclature and classification of enzymes, structure and characteristics of nucleotides and nucleic acids, structure and characteristics of carbohydrates and polysaccharides, structure and characteristics of lipids and fats, coenzymes and vitamins) II. Metabolism (metabolism of carbohydrates and gain of energy, metabolism of fats and amino acids, principles of protein biosynthesis) III. Cellular processes (principles of regulation of metabolic pathways, cell compartimentation and transport, signal transduction)

written exam
Not necessary
The lecture requires basic chemistry; therefore, the previous visit of the Chemie-Propädeutikum (154.084) is recommended.
