Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to develop simple flowsheeting models in an industrial process simulation environment, to investigate chemical engineering problems and perform sensitivity analysis.

Subject of course

Using hands-on exercises based on tutorials students are introduced to the use of industrial process simulation tools. Afterwards, new skills are trained by working on a simple simulation task. After determining of basic process parameters via short-cut methods and checking the accuracy of relevant thermodynamic properties, a flowsheeting model of the process is developed and used for calculation of mass- and energy balances. Working with industrial flowsheeting software shall illustrate potential, but also boundaries of process simulation.

Teaching methods

Introduction to selected flowsheeting software using Tutorials. Elaboration of a simulation task and development of a simple flowsheeting model for balancing the process as well as sensitivity analysis.
