After successful completion of the course, students are able to design a material for a given application, i.e. bearing a set of properties required for the application. This includes the capability (i) to conceive the synthesis of a desired material, (ii) conceive the processing of a desired material.
Ultimate learning goal: At the end of this lecture, the students shall be able to design a material for a given application, i.e. bearing a set of properties required for the application. This includes the capability (i) to conceive the synthesis of a desired material, (ii) conceive the processing of a desired material.
Intermediate learning goals: At the end of the lecture, the students shall
Chapter1: Basics of materials (definitions of materials; materials properties; structure-property relationships)
Chapter2: Synthesis of bulk materials (crystalline vs. amorphous solids; synthesis of crystalline solids from solution/melt/gas/solid state; synthesis of amorphous solids from solution/melt/gas/solid state)
Chapter3: Structuring of materials (nano- and microstructuring; porous materials)
Chapter4: Combination of materials (hybrids, composites)
Chapter5: Challenges in modern materials chemistry
-- Planning a material synthesis procedure
-- discussion excercises
The teaching materials (lecture slides, papers, etc.) will be available after the lecture on TUWEL (https://tuwel.tuwien.ac.at/course/view.php?id=42672). All lextures will take place online over Zoom (https://tuwien.zoom.us/j/99783988355?pwd=RXJlTmVkRFdCQzdSODB1bUl5Y0JqQT09)
Lecture dates and times for winter semester 2021/2022:
! For data protection purposes we can only respond to enquiries sent from an official TU (student) e-mail address !
Assessment is performed via evaluation of a research paper written as a group and a 30 min oral exam. There will be one review round where you will be informed on the status of the paper and you will have the chance to reply to reviewer comments in order to improve the quality of the paper if needed.
The procedure for writing the paper as well as the format and further the details will be explained on 09.12.2021 during the lecture.
To make an appointment for the oral exam, please email Dogukan H. Apaydin at dogukan.apaydin@tuwien.ac.at
Make sure that your inquiry for an examination appointment includes (i) your full name, (ii) your matriculation number, (iii) at least three dates and times that would work well for you, (iv) your telephone number (necessary in case of last-minute cancellation of your exam appointment for unforseen reasons such as sick leave).
