164.339 Lab Course in Qualitative Inorganic Analysis
This course is in all assigned curricula part of the STEOP.
This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2020S, LU, 4.0h, 4.0EC, to be held in blocked form

Properties

  • Semester hours: 4.0
  • Credits: 4.0
  • Type: LU Laboratory Exercise

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand chemical reactions and chemical equilibra (acid/base, redox, precipitation and complexation) and to use these independently and target-oriented for the purpose of separating and identifying cations and anions in aqueous solutions, based on the application of the cation separation scheme and on individual identification reactions.

Subject of course

Introduction to the cation separation scheme and the relevant identification reactions. Identification of cations and anions based on the cation separation scheme and individual ion tests exemplified by the analysis of soluble pure compounds, and multi-component mixtures of increasing complexity.

Teaching methods

Practical and independent work in the chemcial laboratory under supervision of assitant teachers and tutors.

Mode of examination

Immanent

Additional information

Due to the measures in response to the Corona pandemics, the lab course is held in the summer semester 2020 in four courses with only up to 24 participants. The course dates are

1st course: June 2-17, 2020

2nd course: June 19 - July 2, 2020

3rd course July 6-17, 2020

4th course: July 21 - August 3, 2020

The first day of each course will also be used to take over the lab place; the last day of each course is reserved for returnuing the lab place. Each course has nine working days with course times 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

An introductory meeting and the introductory test are held remotely; further infromation on how to access these will be issued for each group separately. Participation is compulsory.

Registration for the lab courses will remain open until four weeks before the start of each lab course. When registering, please make your choice for one of the two courses. It is not necessary to register additionally to the lab course. We will try to accommodate your wish. However, in view of filling all available lab places we reserve the right to move participants to the other lab course.

In case we recive more applications than lab places are available, then the folloowing criteria apply for the ranking:

1) The date of the exam that qualifies you to participate in this lab course, i.e. the lecture course 164.053 "Analytical Chemistry I"

2) The grade of the exam that qualifies you to participate in this lab course (the lecture course 164.053 "Analytical Chemistry I")

3) The successful participation in courses from the Study Programme Entry and Orientation Phase (STEOP)

4) In case of equal rank in all categories 1-3, then the date of registration for this lab course is taken as the fourth and decisive criterion.

For the inventory of the working place, a deposit of Euro 50 is required. This deposit will be returned aftr the end of th course provided the inventory has been returned copletely, in a dlean and functional state.

Examination modalities

Grading according to the success of the practical work, the introductory test and the overall impression based on the regular supervision.

The introductory test has to be passed successfully and all 5 samples have to be analysed correctly in order to complete the lab course successfully. The analysis of the 5 samples has to be completed within 12 working days, while the analysis of the 5. sample must be completed within one working day. In case of an incorrect analysis result, the analysis has to be repeated, resulting also in a downgrading of the mark by one grade.

In case of a failed introductory test, an oral exam has to be passed within the first five working days of the lab course.
