Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to: Understanding the language of crystallographers (international symbols for the 32 point groups and 230 space group types). Understanding the data in the .cif file (Crystallographic Information File) of a crystal structure. Principles of sample preparation and knowledge of the construction of a powder diffractometer. Qualitative evaluation of a measured powder diffraction pattern (phase identification) using appropriate software that offers access to the „Powder Diffraction File“ (PDF). Understanding the PDF entry of a crystalline substance. Knowledge of the potential offered by further evaluation of a diffraction pattern: phase quantification and determination of crystallite sizes.

Subject of course

Production and properties of X-rays - Fundamental concepts of crystallography - Diffraction from crystals - Priciple components and optics of a powder diffratometer - Indexation of a powder diffraction pattern - Calculation of intensities from a crystal structure - Qualitative phase analysis - Crystallite size - Rietveld method
