After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe the different surface and coating technologies. The student can select appropriate coating technologies (PVD, CVD, galvanic plating …) for different applications
Fundamentals of surface layers and interfaces, surface properties, nucleation and growth, structure and texture types, special properties of thin layers, electric double layers, mass and charge transport at interfaces, testing and characterization of surfaces and surface layers. Depositon- and surface techniques; General: inorganic and organic layers, hard material layers, metal layers, metallic wear protection and corrosion protection layers, dispersion layers, passivation, conversion layers, thermal and electric conductive and nonconductive layers. process principles , fields of application, plant technology focus on: PVD, CVD, galvanic plating and surface treatment techniques.
The course contents are conveyed via classroom lectures.
The presented slides are provided electronically before start of the course. Videos about the applications of hard materials are presented. In addition, representative showpieces are presented during lectures, if suitable.
The learning outcomes are evaluated via an oral exam at the lecturer.
