Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand and apply the most important methods for chemical analysis of materials (light scattering, x-ray scattering, XPS, NMR, Hg-porosimetry, IR, contact angle)

Subject of course

Introduction of methods for analysis of materials and overview on analytical problems.

Overview on the most important techniques:
bulk analysis
surface- and particle-analysis

Information content, applications and limitations with respect to characterization of synthetic materials.

Methods: Thermoanalysis, Solid State-NMR, Ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, DLS, SAXS, Porosimetry, determination of molecular weight (GPC), XPS, IR.

Selected applications of characterization of materials with various chemical composition/functionality (glass, ceramics, semiconductors, catalysts, polymers, biomaterials) and various structures (bulk-samples, particles, thin films, nano-structured samples).

Teaching methods
