  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to describe the methods of thermal analysis and to understand their limits of use. They are able to critically question the parameters determined and to design their experiments accordingly. They are able to calculate simple examples using CALPHAD methods and to judge the results.

Subject of course

Basics of the most important thermal anaylsis-techniques (TA, DTA, DSC, TG, TMA, EGA). Demonstrating the application of the methods by means of different material groups and different temperature ranges - assisted by selected experiments and additional techniques like metallography and hardness measurements.  Discussion of the limits and possible errors of the techniques. Special technology like thermooptical analysis, thermo-microscopy, thermo-photometry, thermo-magnetometry, thermo-electrometry and thermo-sonimetry are discussed as well.

Teaching methods

Presentation of the contents by means of powerpoint, whereby the slides are made available in the TISS; Free questions during the lecture, questions from the speakers. Common experiments to determine cooling curves and DTA. Correlation of these results with metallographic techniques. CALPHAD methods are worked in small groups.
