Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • present the experimental and theoretical results of their Bachelor's thesis to a scientific audience,
  • critically discuss the content and presentation technique of other students' presentations.
  • conceptualize a bachelor thesis and use sources correctly (plagiarism)

The seminar is intended to prepare students for the English-language Master's program in Technical Chemistry, therefore the seminar is held in English.

Subject of course

General introduction to writing a scientific paper (details must be discussed with the supervisor of the Bachelor's thesis):

  • Conceptualization of the scientific work
  • Possible variants for the structure of the thesis
  • Dealing with citations and references
  • Labeling of tables and graphics

Designing and giving scientific presentations:

  • Strategies for developing presentations (target audience, structure, etc.)
  • Dealing with the presentation medium (font, color, form, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of rhetoric and communication (language, voice, gestures, etc.)

Discussion of content and secondary skills:

  • Dealing with questions from the audience
  • How do I give feedback?
  • How do I accept feedback?

Teaching methods

Teaching of theoretical basics in three seminar units using slides with critical discussion within the group:

  1. Seminar unit: Conception of a lecture - preparation and presentation by students with joint discussion
  2. Seminar unit: Delivering a lecture - preparation and presentation by students with joint discussion
  3. Seminar unit: Basic aspects of the Bachelor's thesis - presentation by lecturer
  • 15-minute presentation on the Bachelor's thesis followed by a scientific discussion
  • Accept feedback on own presentation
  • Giving feedback on another presentation
  • Video recording for own use and as an example for others (access for seminar participants only)

  • Recommendation: Attend the seminar from the 5th semester onwards
  • The dates for presentations are organized via TUWEL at the beginning of each semester
  • All appointments, presentations, documents and videos are handled exclusively via TISS/TUWEL. Register for the course to gain TUWEL access.
  • In order to be informed in detail about the procedure, participation in the preliminary meeting is recommended
  • Make a note of all attendances
  • Communication platform with the LVA management: Forum in TUWEL

Examination modalities

  • Attendance at introductory lectures part 1 + 2 before the own lecture can be held
  • Attendance at introductory lecture part 3
  • Presentation (15 min) + Discussion
  • Feedback on presentation technique
  • Attendance of 12 presentation units is desired
  • Grading is done together with the supervisor of the experimental part of the thesis - The supervisor contacts the seminar leader before the grade for the Bachelor thesis is awarded and makes a grade proposal for the Bachelor thesis, if all partial performances in the seminar are fulfilled, the grade proposal is approved and the seminar is assessed accordingly
