Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to:

  • describe relevant chemical-technological processes for the preparation of industrially important organic compounds and polymer materials;
  • explain the different synthetic pathways for the production of macromolecular compounds and to enumerate a number of possible applications for these products.

Subject of course

Oil production and refining (distillation, cracking, reforming, hydroprocessing), natural gas, products of oil refinery, coal, gasification of organic raw materials, processes based on synthesis gas (Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, Oxo-synthesis, synthesis of methanol and important derivatives), olefins and acetylene (synthesis, industrial derivatives and their use), aromatics (production, industrial derivatives and their use),  macromolecular chemistry (basics, structural principles, syntheses), production and use of industrially important linear and crosslinked polymers, production of pulp and triglycerides, industrial derivatives and their use

Examination modalities

• Written exam • Once a student has applied for the exam and the retraction period has passed, the exam will be graded. • The exam consists of 6 questions:    • 2 questions Petrochemistry (2x 4 points)    • 2 questions Sustainable Resources (2x 4 points)    • 2 questions Polymerchemistry (2x 4 points) • Each question will be subdivided into sub-questions, for which the distribution of points is not necessarily equal. The points for each sub-question will be displayed transparently next to the question. • To pass the exam with a positive grade, two criteria must be fulfilled:   1. Each unit of the course (petrochemistry, sustainable resources, polymer chemistry) must be evaluated positively (4/8 points).   2. Overall, 12/24 points must be reached. • Positive exam performances can additionally be enhanced with bonuspoints from the lecture, which may lead to an enhanced overall grade.
  In each lecture, 0.25 points can be earned for proactive participation. • Exam evaluation:    • Very Good (1): 21-24 Punkte    • Good (2): 18-20 Punkte    • Satisfactory (3): 15-17 Punkte    • Sufficient (4): 12-14 Punkte    • Insufficient (5): 0-11 Punkte
