Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • to derive the most important natural constants and units of measurement
  • to express principles of radioactivity and laws of the structure of atomic nuclei and their electron shells
  • to apply stoichiometry, chemical equilibrium, and gas laws
  • to understand the structure of the periodic table/trends in the periodic table: atomic, ionic and bond radii, ionization potentials, electron affinities, electronegativities, oxidation numbers
  • to describe chemical bonding: covalent, ionic, metallic, coordinative and their transitions, polar bonds, H-bridges
  • to explain the molecular orbital (MO) theory with simple examples
  • to deduce how potential (mechanical, electrical, chemical) acts as a driving force for physical and chemical changes (chemical equilibrium, solubility product, redox reactions)
  • to solve simple examples of phase equilibria
  • to on the topic of acids and bases, explain what Brönsted acids/bases, Lewis acids/bases are and perform pH calculations
  • to apply simple kinetics and thermodynamics to chemical reactions

Subject of course

Use of important natural constants and measures, radioactivity, atomic nucleus, nuclear reactions, stoichiometry, gas laws. Chemical equilibrium, potential (mechanical, electrical, and chemical) as the driving force of physical and chemical transformations (chemical equilibrium, solubility product, redox reactions), simple examples of phase equilibria and transitions. Acids and bases: Brönsted acids and bases, pH calculations, Lewis acids and bases. Structure and trends of the periodic table: atomic, ionic and covalent radii, ionisation potentials, electron affinity, electronegativity, oxidation number. Introduction to chemical bonds: covalent, ionic, metallic, coordinative and transitions between these. Polar bonds, hydrogen bonds. Molecule orbital (MO) theory with simple examples. Simple kinetics and thermodynamics of chemical reactions.

Examination modalities

Written exam.

Exams are conducted as online exams via https://tuwien.ixam.cloud (further details in German can be found here, or can be requested by e-mail to DI Heinz A. Krebs).

This exam will be recorded and analyzed by software afterwards. If you do not agree, please contact DI Krebs and Prof. Steinhauser. In this case we will arrange a regular written exam.

The exam includes two modules (calculation examples and content questions), which you must pass independently of each other in order to pass the exam overall. If you only pass one of the two modules, you will lose it again as a result of failing the exam. Consequently, you will have to pass both modules again when you take the exam again. You cannot "take" a passed module with you. Detailed information about the exam mode can be found in the document Voraussetzungen.pdf (in German).
