After successful completion of the course, students are able to reflect comprehensive knowledge regarding the synthesis of building blocks for the molecules of life (amino acids, sugars, nucleosides, polyketides, terpenes, ...); they are able to describe directed oligomerization reactions in particular including automation assisted synthesis. Moreover, students have gathered know-how to derive hypotheses regarding probiotic environments for the formation of molecules of life. Finally, students are able to reflect on molecular aspects in enzymes (in particular regarding co-factors) aiming at the preparation of chiral molecules within biocatalytic transformations; this includes in particular biocatalyst modifications and protein engineering.
chemistry of biologically relevant molecues (amino acids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids/terpenes)
prebiotic chemistry (self replication, catalytic activity, homochirality)
mechanism of enzymatic reactions with organic molecules on molecular level (effects of prosthetic groups, coenzyme chemistry)
modifications of this catalytic activity development of catalytic systems from enzymatic models bioinspired molecular devices (self organisation, self assembly)
