Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand simple chemical processes (reactions, thermodynamics, kinetics). Students can discuss basic properties of the elements or derive them from their position in the periodic table, as well as ther applications in industry and technology. Further, chemical bonding can be described based on quantummechanical principles (atom orbitals --> molecular orbitals...) and compounds as molecules can be classified based on the nature of their bonding. Balanced chemical and electrochemical reactions can be formulated, and chemical thermodynamics as well as reaction mechanism analysis can be applied to arbitary problems. Studenst are also able to link chemical and physical problems in the different areas of chemistry, and they will be able to develop skills with software such as Matlab for plotting and analysis.
